Political violence, especially in light of eternity, has hardened the heart of a weary nation. As Christians we look to God’s authority; to His kingdom. Yet even his people are divided on recent events, name calling like children on a playground rather drawing closer to seek community with each other. Do we think the unbelieving world doesn’t see this division?
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
- Matthew 5:9
Ashes fall where bridges stood
Rivers close their mouths in shame
I hear the silence sharpen
A choir of stones crying blame
Every headline cuts like glass
Truth dressed thin in smoke and flame
The air tastes of iron and sorrow
Every word another grave
Why do we bleed before we speak?
Why do we burn the ground we seek?
Ashes rise, the sky won’t breathe
Torches light what love can’t see
We tear the bridges from our hands
And drown divided on the sand
Crowds roar louder than the soul can pray
Fear plants roots where hope decays
We trade our peace for fleeting rage
And lock the future in a cage
Why do we curse what makes us whole?
Why trade our lives for dust and gold?
Ashes rise, the sky won’t breathe
Torches light what love can’t see
We tear the bridges from our hands
And drown divided on the sand
Why don’t we bend before we break
Let our walls and kingdoms quake?
Why don’t we lay our crowns aside
And model Him who sacrificed?
Ashes rise, the sky won’t breathe
Torches light what love can’t see
We tear the bridges from our hands
And drown divided on the sand
If we embrace instead of burn
We lay our pride so we can learn
Bridges rise and wounds are healed
Christ in us can be revealed
The river waits, the bridges call
Mercy bleeds beneath it all
Not too late, His people cry
Walk in His steps, the sacrifice.
